The myth of aphrodisiacs

From time immemorial, man has wanted to increase his manly power, prolong his erections, stimulating his sexual desire, multiply its performance ... and he sought in nature, how to get there. This ceaseless quest for the Grail has tended to neglect women's sexuality, while women cooked for love potions and other magic potions to "boost" the performance of their lovers, knowing they would not be the last to benefit !

We talk an aphrodisiac to describe "any means, material or imaginary, can stimulate, and even more to boost capacity, both physical and intellectual records of candidates for erotic". (Le dico of love and sexual practices of Jacques Waynberg, Ed Milan).

Fact or fiction?
Honey, ginseng, chocolate, dried elephant tusk, rhino horn or deer, vanilla, cola nuts, nutmeg, oysters, clove, rosemary, champagne, cardamom, saffron, dill, garlic ... The list of Food, plants and preparations reported aphrodisiac is virtually infinite. We can classify these substances in two families. Firstly those whose effect is perhaps not completely zero, but has never been scientifically proven as superior to placebo. If the desire is not to go, there will be no miracle! Then those who might be able to trigger an erection, or extend, but are dangerous (in terms of heart or kidney, for example).

Some substances known
Chocolate: long been celebrated by all the greedy, it would be both an aphrodisiac and euphoric. It was discovered recently that stimulate secretion in the brain of a substance called anandamide that mimics the effects of cannabis. Alas, alas, three times, he should eat about 13 kilos of chocolate to expect to achieve nirvana ...
Yohimbine: it comes from the bark of a tree in Cameroon, yohimbehe. It is effective and is found elsewhere in our pharmacopoeia, as it is a vasodilator. It causes an influx of blood from the penis and helps erection sometimes. Results often requires increasing doses ... and side effects are not negligible. This substance is to be avoided in cases of diseases of the kidneys or liver, and it should not be associated with certain drugs against hypertension.
Cantharides: the Spanish fly, once pulverized, congested genitals and may cause a strong erection by the presence of a compound, cantharidin, which is also found in frog legs! She won the Marquis de Sade to be jailed for poisoning a few famous people with chocolates! As for Richelieu, he reveled as he did in making France the "candy cantharides Richelieu"! In fact, it is a highly toxic and can cause priapism (painful prolonged erection) or renal hemorrhage.
Truffles: "It makes women more tender and men more enterprising" said Brillat-Savarin in 1825. It is without doubt the "virtues" which is the barrier to substances it contains, some of which are very similar to testosterone (a hormone linked to sexual desire in men as in women).
Garlic: The Talmud says he makes the sperm more abundant, and in medieval France, a stew with garlic assured young people passionate nights of endless love. In the Middle East, the groom is still a clove of garlic in his buttonhole!
Mustard: its name derived from "burning must", while one program! And throughout Europe, the men were in the habit of smearing their penis just before the act, a poultice made from mustard to the hot ... but least effective, of course, since it stings the skin, dilates blood vessels and intensifies local blood flow.
The mandrake: its success is linked to the principle of similarity, since this root has a phallic shape. In reality it contains scopolamine, a compound used today against seasickness!
Ginseng: is undoubtedly the most famous aphrodisiac, and the most requested on the planet! The Chinese emperors consumed excessively in honor of their best around 1 000 concubines. But no serious European study has failed to demonstrate a real action. In practice, we sometimes found associated with nux vomica, which contains strychnine, but oh so exciting dangerous!
In conclusion, the best aphrodisiac, and less dangerous, is undoubtedly your imagination! But nobody prevents you to dinner gallant offer oysters, a dish of frog legs winged, champagne (in small doses, otherwise the cons-performance is guaranteed!) And chocolates. The effect should not be negative, anyway!
